Chuck left, Wesley told him to call us on Sunday so we could have the Lord's Supper with him via phone. Chuck and I were impressed that Wesley thought of his him having to take the Lord's Supper alone on the boat. Wesley, who was baptized the summer of 2007, understands the importance and need for communion around the table with our Lord as a christian family, even more than we realized until his request. The fact that he wanted to share that with his dad, even though he's on a boat, touched us.
Just a few minutes ago Chuck called. He asked Zack led the prayer for the bread and Wesley the prayer for the cup. It was a special moment.
People have said things that have made us aware that they see us as weird because of Chuck's job. For example, once I was talking about a service project to someone while Chuck was out to sea, I said "the boys and I will go and do it anyway", the person replied curtly "that's not how our family works, we wouldn't do it that way, either we go as a family or not at all." I knew by the tone that the person saw us as less than of a family than their family. We certainly aren't less of a family. If anything we are a stronger family because of the challenges we face by being apart.
His job gives us opportunities that others don't have. We have to be creative. We have to look for the blessings and opportunities the job affords. Wesley's request made me realize that even when we're apart we're making connections in new ways. I love that Wesley was creative and thoughtful of both his fathers. Not many families have the opportunities we have to push beyond the status quo.
I'm reminded of this scripture, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matt. 18:20) , when I think of us sharing communion via the telephone with Chuck.
We're blessed to have out-of-the-box God moments like these. Share an out-of-the box God moment you've had. Leave a comment for others to enjoy your testimony.
