Kindergarten phonics...

...and another tale from the Kindergarten classroom.

We teach a phonics based language arts program in our kindergartens, it's inclusive. It teaches letter recognition, phonemic awareness, ect...

One of the components is to tap out words. Example tap out the sounds for each letter and you have /d/ /o/ /g/. You get DOG!

Last month we taught a unit on bugs. Two students at different tables used their phonemic skills and wrote similar sentences:

I love in sex.

Of course you would only understand "I love in sex!" in context. Once you look at the picture of bugs flying allover the page you can read phonetically: I love insects!

What's in a name?

Just this week we received an e-mail from a parent asking for the name of the sub in her son's class for the previous two days. Little Johnny (to protect the identity of the innocent) said her name was Mrs. Hell. Mom was certain that couldn't be correct. LOL.

She was relieved to find the teachers name was Mrs. Howell!

Happy Summer!
